Ice in Ceres’ Shadowed Craters Linked to Tilt History

Dwarf planet Ceres may be hundreds of millions of miles from Jupiter, and even farther from Saturn, but the tremendous influence of gravity from these gas giants has an appreciable effect on Ceres’ orientation. In a new study, researchers from NASA’s Dawn mission calculate that the axial tilt of Ceres —

Impact crater linked to Martian tsunamis

Scientists have located an impact crater linked to powerful tsunamis that swept across part of ancient Mars.

The team believe an asteroid triggered 150m-high waves when it plunged into an ocean thought to have existed on northern Mars three billion years ago.

Asteroid Split in Two and, Years Later, Developed Tails

Asteroids on the main belt, situated between Mars and Jupiter, move around the Sun in quasi circular orbits, so they do not undergo the temperature changes which, in comets, produce the characteristic tails. Nevertheless, some twenty cases have been documented of asteroids which,

Tiny Asteroid Whizzes by Earth (2017 EA)

A small near-Earth asteroid less than 3 meters (10 feet) across whizzed safely past Earth today at a distance so close that it passed well inside the ring of geosynchronous satellites. Designated 2017 EA, the asteroid made its closest approach to Earth at 6:04 a.m.

Researchers aim to measure risk of exploding asteroids

As 2013’s Chelyabinsk meteor proved, an asteroid doesn’t have to make direct contact with Earth’s surface to do considerable damage.

The Chelyabinsk meteor, which became a fireball brighter than the sun, a superbolide, as it entered Earth’s atmosphere above Russia,

Dawn Discovers Evidence for Organic Material on Ceres

NASA’s Dawn mission has found evidence for organic material on Ceres, a dwarf planet and the largest body in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Scientists using the spacecraft’s visible and infrared mapping spectrometer (VIR) detected the material in and around a northern-hemisphere crater called Ernutet.
